Reasons for a job switch

Sooner or later the itch begins. You can't help but feel it's time to make that job switch. The reasons could be varied: monetary, job satisfaction, or even a lousy boss. Whatever be your reason and however determined you are to move on, you still need to plan the transition well.

To begin with, tackle the issue of why you are making the switch. It is important to leave for the right reasons. Start off by listing the main problems with your current job. Is it possible to fix the problems? Do they have a solution?

It's a good idea to discuss these issues with a trusted colleague or your boss. They may be willing to support you once they learn about your aspirations. 6 top reasons for a job switch and what you must do before taking the plunge.

'I hate my job profile'
If this is the case, you will be less productive and will start deteriorating professionally as the job does not stimulate you any more.
Ask yourself what it is in your profile that you dislike. For instance, if you are a creative person, a mechanical job profile will stifle you. You need to ensure that your dislikes are not emotional in nature. So just because you dislike the people your work with does not mean it is time for a switch. One you are clear what it is in your profile that needs changing, talk to your seniors to find out if there is a possibility that the issue will be reconsidered. If not, then it is probably time to move on.

'I want more responsibility'
Hit a ceiling in terms of your career growth and don't see any future in the current setup? Or, the only way you can get to the next level is if your boss resigns?
Then you need to talk to your boss and explore the option of moving to a new department with increased levels of responsibility. If it works out, make sure that you are not just being lured away by the promise of a fancy sounding designation.
Don't be inhibited by starting afresh on a new assignment within the same organisation. It will work out well for you if it allows you to grow professionally and financially.

'I want to start out on my own'
Tired of working for someone else? Have a great business idea that you feel can turn big? If being your own boss appeals to you then that might be a good reason to leave the job.
But, do your homework. Don't just get excited and rush into something. Is there a market for your services/product? Have you got a solid business plan in place? Have you considered how you are going to raise money for it? Have you discussed it with professionals in the industry?
In your enthusiasm, don't forget that you will be letting go of the security and comfort associated with a steady paycheck. So be ready for a rough ride.
Consider the possibility of failure. Most new businesses fail or shut down in their very first year of operation.

'It's just personal'
Erratic shifts. Lots of out-of-station travel. Too time consuming with no time for the family. Expected to work seven days a week? Any of these could cause you to reconsider your priorities.
While that is alright, don't live under the illusion that everything will fall into place with a new job. You may have to make some important lifestyle decisions to achieve a balance between work-life and personal time.
It's a competitive world and you may have to take a cut in your salary to have more time at home or pursue other interests.

'I got fired'
You could get fired as most organisations adopt a performance-based culture with little tolerance towards non-performers. Don't be angry and waste time bad mouthing people and the organisation. Instead, find out the real reason and move out.

Or maybe, you are about to get fired with the company on a downsizing mode. Then it's better to walk out before you are left with no choice.

There are no foolproof ways to protect against job loss but you can certainly do the following.
  • Be calm and proactive, not reactive. Talk to your boss and find out if you can be relocated or be offered a different position. Storming into his office and shouting will not get you anywhere.
  • Stay positive. It can open new doors and opportunities that you may have ignored if not challenged.
  • If downsizing has started, aggressively take more initiatives to get involved in the organisation. Make yourself valuable so that losing you is not an easy option for the organisation. However, continue your job search simultaneously.
'I hate my boss'
The popular cliché, "People don't leave their organisations; they leave their boss", holds true. You are just a part of a large community who feels the same way.
Here are some typical bad boss traits:
  • Does not respect employees.
  • Does not trust colleagues.
  • Does not take or give any feedback.
  • Assigns too many tasks and sets impossible deadlines.
  • Is often rude and intimidating.
Before resigning, try these options.

1. Communicate your issues
Be specific. For example, just saying that you have too much work is vague. Instead, break down your tasks into the amount of time you will actually have to spend on each of them that week, and show your boss how many hours it will take. With a clear statement of required time, your boss is more likely to lessen your load to a reasonable level.

2. Make your boss feel good
This one is specially true if you boss has a big ego or needs to have his confidence constantly boosted. Work harder on him. If you have a good idea but think he will refuse, invest a little more time in convincing him.

3. Do a good job
This may sound obvious but when the quality of your work is good, everyone benefits including your boss. So make sure that you exceed your goals or targets, are punctual for all meetings, meet deadlines and are a brand ambassador for your company and project it well.

4. Anticipate the your boss's need
If you know that the boss's boss likes graphs and analysis in a presentation, prepare them for your boss. You can say something like, "I know your superior likes graphical illustrations, so I thought these might make your presentation go a little smoother". If your boss is at a loss of words in a meeting, you might want to chip in and give him the support he needs. Be supportive, invest in building a rapport.
There is no such thing as the perfect boss. But if you are willing to acknowledge his/her flaws and strong points, then you are on the right track.

The bottom-line: Know your worth and if all else fails, don't feel dejected. It is time for you to move on.

BARFI (2012) and its wide range of inspirational sources.

Director Anurag Basu’s last hit film before BARFI was an all inspired venture titledMETRO which took its major content from more than one sources of the west. Perhaps that was the reason why while watching two great performances in BARFI, I still wasn’t convinced enough from the film itself because its direction again looked like all inspired from the different films of Charlie Chaplin and Mr. Bean as I could recall. But since the viewers were immensely enjoying the movie due to their own reasons, the inspiration factor took a backseat at my end which was again brought forward by a great post by friends revealing its few important sources along with their video links. The post started a fire over the net which lead to several other updates at various sites including IBNLive and then the readers also started adding many other inspirational sources of the film which simply ruined the BARFI impact for many who initially liked it.
Given below is the complete list of all those inspirations along with their links which might be disturbing for few readers here too who really loved watching the movie and its enjoyable content. So just check these out and enjoy the Original videos followed by the director in the widely appreciated BARFI.
1. The single door sliding scene in the film has been taken from Charlie Chaplin’s THE ADVENTURER (1917).
2. The sequence where Rupa Ganguly brings her daughter Illeana in the forest kind of location and reveals the secret of her silent love is straight away from THE NOTEBOOK(2004).
3. The final scene when Priyanka comes and shares Ranbir bed is also similar to the one in THE NOTEBOOK (2004).
4. The comedy scenes wherein where Ranbir walks into a door and his nose gets hurt, which he brings back in place with his other hand, making some more funny faces along with his comic movements with the dummy on a sofa are both inspired from the song sequence of “Make Them Laugh” in SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN (1952).
5. The sequence where a statue is being inaugurated and Ranbir is found sleeping in the lap of the statue as the covers are taken off is straight away taken from Charlie Chaplin’s CITY LIGHTS (1931).
6. The comedy scene on the ladder with Ranbir at one end and the policemen on the other is inspired from Buster Keaton’s COPS (1922).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nkkUZ6e3jM&feature=player_detailpage#t=18s
7. The scene where a piece of paper sticks with Ranbir and the manner in which he sticks papers strips to his eyelids and tongue was also there in TV series Mr. Bean(1990).
8. Planting the nails on the road sequence which results in a car crash is clearly lifted from a Japanese film KIKUJIRO (1999).
http://youtu.be/Ip9OI7ockW8
9. The bicycle chase moving within the narrow lanes and tapping the windows sequence reminds you of Jackie Chan’s PROJECT A (1983).
10. The mouse running inside a running wheel can also be seen in a scene of BLACK CAT, WHITE CAT (1998).
11. The scene where Ranbir reads the newspaper of a naked Sadhu sitting beside him is lifted from a Swedish newspaper’s Advertisement.
12. The scene where it seems a car is coming towards both Ranbir and Illeana on the road which actually turns out to be two bikes coming parallel to each other is inspired from a similar sequence in MR. NOBODY (2009).
13. The parts of its background score seem to be very close to the soundtrack of French film AMELIE (2001).
14. The tragic scene of Ranbir’s father getting a severe attack but Ranbir unable to hear his voice has its resemblances with a similar kind of sequence in Gulzar’s KOSHISH(1972).
15. The sub-plot of the film staging a fake kidnap and death is partially inspired from the similar one in GONE BABY GONE (2007).
16. The main plot of the film of a love affair between a funny differently-abled man and an autistic girl is though not entirely same but quite close to BENNY & JOON (1993) and a Korean film OASIS (2002).
Now looking at the above mentioned sources of inspiration, it can easily be said that the director Anurag Basu, does have a fabulous research team with him worth praising. Because its really not easy to first collect and then also incorporate such a wide range of inspirations into a single film.

THORNS AND ROSES

A man planted a rose and watered it faithfully.  One day, as he examined it, he saw that the bud would soon blossom, but noticed thorns upon the stem.  He thought........"How can any beautiful flower come from a plant burdened with so many sharp thorns?"  Saddened by this thought, he neglected to water the rose, and before it was ready to bloom, it died.
So it is with many people.  Within every soul there is a rose. The God-like qualities planted in us at birth growing amid the thorns of our faults.
Many of us look at ourselves and see only the thorns, the defects.  We despair, thinking that nothing good can possibly come from us.  We neglect to water the good within us, and eventually it dies.  We never realize our potential.
Some people do not see the rose within themselves; someone else must show it to them.
One of the greatest gifts a person can possess is to be able to reach past the thorns and find the rose within others.  This is characteristic of love... to look at a person and know their true faults.
Accepting that person into your life, while recognizing the nobility in their soul.  Help them to realize that they can overcome their faults.
If we show them the rose, they will conquer their thorns.  Only then will they blossom many times over.
"Love is a heavenly drop spilling from the chalice of life to moderate its bitterness."
"Where the heart is willing it will find a thousand ways, but where it is unwilling it will find a thousand excuses."

10 things all women should totally avoid

How much ever women may complain about men and their idiosyncrasies that turn them off, the fact is that they too have certain traits that can not only put men off but also drive them over the edge. Nobody's perfect and let's accept it. In fact, here's a list of top 10 things women do that drive men to the brink of insanity.

1. Divine Diva
Many women try to place themselves under a "holier than thou" light, never admitting that they have a huge trail of exes behind them. This does not imply that all women do this, but the ones who do, should simply stop trying to water down their past. Women are allowed to have just as much fun as guys, and they should find a man who can appreciate that.

2. Bitching… as Usual
It is indeed difficult to get a woman to compliment another. On the contrary, they love to nitpick about everything from weight to hairstyle and everything in between. Only a woman will notice if another woman's shoes don't match her purse or if her earrings are old-fashioned and turn it into a huge calamity.

3. Green-Eyed Monster
There can be times when the mere mention of another woman can spell doom. When another female enters the equation in any way, shape or form, she tenses up. If you give her reason to doubt you, then her paranoia is likely justified. Otherwise, you shouldn't have to pay the price because she's feeling insecure.

4. Needy Me
Insecurity is another common demon. Oftentimes women need their men to tell them how special they are. They use their man as an emotional crutch, looking for moral, mental and emotional support. Ironically, however, most men prefer the tougher version because this way, they'd at least not have to worry about her all the time.

5. Code Language
The old "What are you thinking?" question is a timeless example of how women love to test their men and search for their true feelings about them. They hurtle obscure, theoretical questions that, according to them, men are supposed to know the answers to if they're really in love.
While the guy usually tenses up and his mind goes into overdrive looking for the right answer, the lady just looks on from a distance. At this point, there's nothing the guy can do except throw an answer out there and hope he does not screw it all up.

6. loss of Personal Space
The intense desire to groom their man and clean up their cupboard is something that drives most men off the wall. It is irksome because it not only makes the man feel incompetent but also leaves him aghast because his only personal space - his cupboard - has been looked through. This need not necessarily mean that the man has something to hide, but how will the woman feel if her closet has been messed around with?

7. Become too Emotional
Women can cry over almost anything: a sad movie (or even a happy one), a broken nail or a haircut gone wrong. What men actually cannot handle is the fact that women expect them to clean up the emotional mess after that. This is because most men have no clue about how to deal with a crying woman.

8. Shopaholics
When it comes to shopping, there just aren't enough hours in the day for most women. Whether it's something as simple as window-shopping or an all-out spending spree, woman can spend hours on end in a mall. The problem actually arises when they drag the poor, clueless man along with them as well.

9. Talk Incessantly
A simple question like "How was your day?" would render a 45-minute conversation out of a woman. Needless to say, most women love to talk. It's not that men don't care about what they have to say; it's just that they don't need to hear every minute detail that women want to tell them about.

10. The S-Weapon
In the war of the sexes, many women, in an effort to show their superiority, attack men's universal weak spot: sex. While such a brilliant tactic definitely needs to be appreciated, should the basic human rights not be left alone?

Learn to Tolerate
If you look at the grand scheme of things, women's annoying habits aren't that bad. Chances are that all men adapt to them in time, as all women do when it comes to the equally annoying tendencies of men. Nobody's perfect, and that's something we can all agree on.
